I was sitting in Starbucks this morning with my little girl. We were sipping warm drinks and listening to Christmas music playing… it is coooold outside… it all just combined and hit me like nothing but nostalgia can. I just sat being so thankful for all the holiday seasons I’ve had, all the ones to come. It really is a time of year that makes me the most sappy- so much giving, coziness, beautiful lights twinkling every place you turn and, most importantly, guaranteed time with your loved ones. I know it can be a stressful time of the year as well… I just wish for all of you at least a few moments where you can relish in how amazing this time of the year is and all it represents. Maybe I can help a bit? I have a lovely little arsenal of fun goodies that I am going to start giving out. Some of them can be a present to yourself (cause you deserve it) and some will make fabulous gifts. I am going to try to do one a day- aiming for a 12 Days of Christmas vibe ;). The best way to watch for them though is to follow my twitter (my twitter feeds my FB so you guys over there should get updated too!). I’ll announce each one there! I’ll do the first one today so keep an eye out!!
On a side note, I was featured today over on Evoking You. Really fun blog with lots of great features… have fun checking it out!! :)
You can enter several ways… comment below with your favorite Christmas tradition, ‘like’ or comment on this give away on my FB page, retweet it from my twitter or use the Punch Tab link above! This one ends tomorrow at noon… and I’ll put another up soon after. Good luck!!!
I am a simple girl. I don’t like to have/store/accumulate more than I need. I don’t like clutter. I don’t like to carry anything but the necessary (I went through two babies and never once carried a diaper bag) ;) So when it comes to photography gear I stay right in line. I shoot two camera bodies/two lenses and that is it. I don’t have or need any more (as a portrait photographer I have found that my 85 and 35 cover my bases and the lack of “needing” more makes my pocket happy). The trick has been finding a bag for what I have. I don’t need anything big or with a lot of compartments since I carry so little but I use grips and find that the smaller bags just don’t cut it. Cue Kelly Moore.
I have been using her hobo bag since she released it and loved the quality and fact that it actually looks like a bag that you would buy at a high end department store. Everything from the material (this vegetarian girl REALLY appreciates quality man made) to the zippers (they NEVER catch) to the magnets (strong & placed perfectly), the bag has been nothing but perfect (& I get tons of compliments carrying it). My gear was just a little too much though and I could never get the zipper closed when everything was put away (dang grips). But then the MiMi arrived…
I LOVE this bag. It is compact, beautiful (the pictures just don’t do the purple justice) and all of my stuff fits perfectly. I love the two handles- makes it look even more purse & less gear like. Not to mention that the pocket in back is just perfect for the iPad!
So why am I telling you all of this? Well… 1) people ask about my gear all the time so I thought this would be a great place to share ;) and 2) Kelly is giving a bag to one of YOU!! All you have to do is tell me in the comment section which bag you want (tell me color too!) or which bag you already have and why it is so wonderful and I will pick a winner Sunday, August 14th!
I also love that Kelly does little videos about each of her bags (why don’t all manufacturers do this??). Here is her (much better) description of the Mimi…
I hope everyone is having a fabulous summer! I am off on another get away… road tripping through Montana & Canada (& getting to see some of my favorite people!!) It reminds me of this quote I saw the other day…
“Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” Yes.
Get out there and enjoy your summer. Enjoy your life :)
I get many emails asking me about basics… how I meter, how I white balance, how I shoot in full sun, what do I say to clients when x, y or z… I have to say- I totally remember that time. I remember starting out and wanting to know everything NOW. Staring at images wondering ‘how in the heck…’ or being frustrated that a client was asking or needing something of me that I just didn’t know how to maneuver. It took a good year or two of full time business to get to a point where I finally felt like I knew what in the world I was doing (well, most of the time at least) ;) It would have been fantastic to have a go-to that I could gain all that knowledge from in one place. Lucky for the those just starting out now there are a ton of resources (yeah- I’m going all old school “back when I started out…” (said in my best grandpa voice). My friend Pascale has put together a couple of books that cover ALL of these things. When I read it a few months back it was page after page of “yep… yep” “exactly” “totally true!”. She has summed up all of the things that you need to know when you are starting your business into super reader friendly, enlightening books!
As she explains: “This e-book covers everything you need to know in order to successfully launch and sustain your own photography business. I delve into logo, branding, pricing, technical expertise, marketing, white balance, metering, histograms, finding the light, using reflectors and other tools of the trade, flash, post processing, RAW editing, calibration of your monitor, using actions correctly, business forms, various FAQ’s, composition, preventing burn out, charity work, finding your style, copyright considerations, plenty of links to great articles and other websites and, basically, just a whole lot of SOUND advice. I spent hours upon hours putting this all together and included actual screen shot captures of my editing process with sample images to help illustrate the process for those of you who are very visual (like me). It’s 50 pages chock-full of valuable advice, expertise, images and information.”
And if you aren’t quite at this point she has a fantastic basics book as well- “If you do not yet understand how such things as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length and depth of field work/function then you should get my Basics Beginner Book before getting this e-book.”
You can find her Beginner’s Book here.
& the link to her Nitty Gritty ebook here.
And if you put the discount code ‘SHANNON’ in at checkout you will get $24 off!! Thank you so much Pascale for offering this… I know these will be fabulous resources for all of you starting out!! :)
